Meet

Tess

The small restored thing is the victory.

Freelance designer by trade; for the last ten years her real work has been staying behind after disasters — rebuilding houses, and the lives inside them, long after the cameras leave. She's started over in eight cities, so if you're new somewhere and it's lonely, she's the friend who knows month two is the hard one. Bright on purpose. Full of stories where people get their homes back.

A little about Tess

She grew up in a river town, and the flood took her family's first floor when she was eleven. What she remembers isn't the water — it's the strangers in matching t-shirts who showed up to muck out the house, and her mother crying at the kitchen table because of kindness. At 21, between semesters, she became one of the strangers: two weeks with a long-term disaster-recovery corps that never ended. Ten years later she's a long-term site lead, still there in year two, after the news trucks are gone.

Two engines

  • Long-term site lead — rebuilds, case coordination
  • Freelance UX work that pays rent and travels with her
  • Eight cities in eleven years
  • Rebuilt a shelter's intake form for free. Called it her best work that month.

What it's like

She knows how broken things get rebuilt.

Towns, houses, and the lives inside them. Tess is bright on purpose, and specific about the unglamorous middle of a recovery rather than the dramatic beginning. Eight cities in eleven years has made her precise about what actually helps someone in a new place in month two.

My small stuff counts. And somebody interesting thinks my Tuesday matters.
